The Colon Township Lakeboard Newsletter Spring 2010

The Colon Township Lakeboard and Advisory Committee wish everyone a safe and happy summer.

Anticipated Lake Drawdown

The Lake Board has applied for a lake drawdown permit to lower Palmer and Long lakes four feet for the purpose of seawall repair and property projects.  Lowering will begin October 1 and be completed by October 9, and will remain down until raised on or before January 15, 2011.  Each owner must apply for a permit for their specific project.  The Joint Permit application is available at www.michigan.gov/jointpermit, or copies will be available at the Colon Village office.  Contact DNRE, Land & Water Management Division (269-567-3500) for permit questions. Permit approval takes at least 90 days after all required information, including project drawings if required, is provided.  Drawdown permit status will be posted at www.colonmi.com and the Colon Village office (269-432-2532

Lakeboard Meetings and Announcements

The Colon Township Lakeboard will tentatively meet on May 8, June 12, July 10, August 14, and September 11, 2010. Meetings will be held at the Colon Fire Station (just west of the village of Colon on M-86). Meetings will begin at 10AM.  The announcement of meetings will be in The Sturgis Journal

The Lakeboard would like to thank the Colon Community Fire and Rescue for the gracious use of their facility to hold our meetings. Please support their all you can eat pancake and sausage breakfast on May 30th. Following dates to be announced.

Lakeboard Balance 4/1/10 $102,292.18

2010 Income (Assessment Roll Collections)    $ 50,938.85

New Assessment Roll

The Lakeboard will be establishing a new assessment roll for the next 5 year period. There will be 2 public hearing to discuss the roll. Dates to be announced when they are available.

Boat Safety Class to be Offered

The Saint Joseph County Marine Patrol will be offering a boat safety class on Saturday, May 22 and Saturday, June 26, 2010 at the Colon Fire Barn from 9AM to 3PM. Those who are 12 years old but not yet 14 years old must be accompanied by a parent. You will need to bring your own lunch and a #2 pencil. Those interested in attending should contact the Sheriff’s Office at 269-467-9045 to sign up

Special Guests at May 8 Lakeboard meeting. Roger Schrock , from the Sheriff’s Marine Patrol will be present to answer questions related to boating and water safety. Andy Tomaszewski, PLM, will present the lake treatment plan/schedule for 2010
